Puppy Tip #5 (What should I bring with me to get my new puppy?)

You have prepared everything at home for the arrival of your new puppy, and now it's time to go get them! The only problem, is you don't know what to bring with you. It's ok! I made a list below to help you out!

  • A 6ft leash
You don't want your leash to be so long your puppy can go far and get hurt, but you don't want it so short that they have no room to move at all! Six feet is the ideal length to ensure both safety and comfort.

  • A collar
You need something to hook your leash to! I recommend a collar but a harness with work as well.

  • A crate or carrier
If your pup is a little too hyper, or even extremely nervous, it is best that you allow them to ride in the crate! Sometimes it is better to hold them, however, you won't know until you get there.

  • Paper towels
If your pup has an accident or vomits, you need a way to clean it up.

  • Fabric towel
I recommend having this wrapped around your new addition! This way, if they vomit or urinate, you have something to catch it.

  • Poop bags
If you plan to stop anywhere on the way home, you will need a way to pick up poop should your pup need to go!

  • Water bowl
It's always best to be prepared! If you will be traveling more than three hours away, bring some water and a water bowl. Let your pup have a drink.

  • A comfy blanket you can rub mom before you separate them
Your pup is going through a big transition right now. Everything they know is being ripped away from them, including their mom! Make sure you capture mom's scent on a blanket for the pup to use when you get home. This will help your pup have a smooth transition into their new life with as minimal stress as possible.
